The Outdoor Leadership Program at RNS is based around a passion and appreciation for the great outdoors. Through a variety of wilderness activities, we incorporate technical skills specific to outdoor adventure and interpersonal skills such as perseverance, teamwork, and commitment. These are blended with “green” skills that focus on environmental ethics and a knowledge about the natural world. Our goal is to provide numerous opportunities that allow our students to try new outdoor adventure activities in our local region as well as highlight the unique landscape around the Bay of Fundy, home to the highest tides in the world.
Duke of Edinburgh Award
Students will be provided with numerous opportunities to fulfill the Adventure requirements of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Program. This will include the Practice and Qualifying Adventurous Journey for the Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels.

RNS Outdoors Series
Training Series
We will provide our students with activity-specific training and certification. Local instructors and experts will offer courses and workshops on skills such as canoeing, sea kayaking, rock climbing, wilderness first aid, skiing/snowboarding, winter survival, and more. This will be a component of some of our grade trips such as Grade 8 where students will earn the Paddle Canada Basic Canoe certification before they participate in a 2-day adventure.
Explore Series
The Explore Series includes a variety of 1- and 2-day wilderness trips or activities that provide an introduction to adventure skills and offer students a chance to get outside and enjoy the natural areas in our region. Students will enjoy opportunities such as camping overnight in Fundy National Park, canoeing on the Kennebecasis River or rock climbing at a local cliff. This series will include our Grade 6-9 trips that allow students the opportunity to enjoy a variety of outdoor adventure experiences.
Expedition Series
This series will allow students to spend more time (3 to 5 days) in the wilderness learning advanced adventure skills to keep them safe and comfortable in the outdoors. These trips provide the necessary requirements of the Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey for Silver and Gold.
