Grade 9 / Grade 10 Core French

This course is designed for students with little or no background in French who are seeking to improve their ability in the language in order to move on to greater challenges. This course encompasses diverse units and themes, all of which are related to the interests of students. Each unit will include reading, comprehension, writing, and speaking in French. Elements of grammar and vocabulary, including, but not limited to, the present tense, past tense, and the future tenses will be studied throughout the year. The goal of this course is to reinforce and to build upon language skills that can be used in everyday social situations. Students require a credit in Grade 8 French (or Grade 9 French) to register for this course.
Grade 9 / Grade 10 Intermediate French

The content of this course covers units similar to those of the Core French course, but it moves at a faster pace. This course is designed for students who have done very well in the Core French program and who wish to challenge themselves in a more intensive French atmosphere. Each unit will include reading, comprehension, writing, and speaking in French. Elements of grammar and vocabulary, including, but not limited to, the present tense, past tense, and the future tenses will be studied throughout the year. The goal of this course is to reinforce and to build upon language skills that can be used in everyday social situations. Students require a credit in Grade 8 French (or Grade 9 French) to register for this course.
Grade 9 / Grade 10 Advanced French

This course is intended and required for students coming from a French Immersion background, but it may also be suitable for those who wish to challenge themselves and increase their French level more quickly. This course has been created to foster an appreciation for, and an interest in, the French language and its various cultures, while providing students with an opportunity to improve their communication skills. Further, it is designed to assist students to meet the requirements of being able to converse, and to read and write in French at a more sophisticated level. Each day in class, students will have the opportunity to listen, speak, write, and read in French. Grammar, vocabulary, and verbs are all pertinent areas of instruction in this class. Students will acquire a better understanding of the language and, therefore, be able to express more abstract ideas while learning to express themselves in situations of debate and discussion. Students require a credit in Grade 8 French (or Grade 9 French) with a grade of at least 75% and permission from the Head of Modern Languages to register for this course.
Grade 9 / Grade 10 French Literature

This course is intended for students with an extensive French background and is required for French first-language students, but may also be appropriate for students who have excelled in a French Immersion or an Advanced French program. This course has been created to foster an appreciation for, and an interest in, the French language and its various cultures, while providing students with an opportunity to improve their communication skills. Through the study of a variety of works and genres including, but not limited to, poetry, theatre, novels, and short stories, students will study the culture of the Francophone world. A close-reading of the texts and an introduction to literary analysis will be combined with a study of the technical aspects of the language to help students improve their knowledge and comfort with the French language. Students require a credit in Grade 8 French (or Grade 9 French) and permission from the Head of Modern Languages to register for this course.
Grade 11 IB French SL ab initio

This course is designed for students who have little or no background in the French language. Students may only enroll in this course if they have studied French for fewer than two years. French ab initio is designed to equip students with the basic vocabulary and grammar necessary to communicate in authentic situations. Units covered are self and others, the world of work, city and services, and nutrition. Through a series of cultural projects, students will develop an appreciation for the Francophone cultures of the world while learning key vocabulary and language structures that will enable them to converse comfortably in French.
Grade 11 IB Spanish SL ab initio

This course is designed for students who have little or no background in the Spanish language. Students may only enroll in this course if they have studied Spanish for fewer than two years. Spanish ab initio is designed to equip students with the basic vocabulary and grammar necessary to communicate in authentic situations. Units covered are self and others, the world of work, city and services, and nutrition. Through a series of cultural projects, students will develop an appreciation for the Spanish-speaking
cultures of the world while learning key vocabulary and language structures that will enable them to converse comfortably in Spanish.

Students will develop an understanding of their own identity and patrimony through comparison with the global community. Further, this course is designed to assist students to meet the basic requirements of being able to converse, read, and write in French in order to express more sophisticated ideas and arguments. Emphasis is placed on reading, writing, researching, translation, comprehension, use of specific text types, and oral communication skills. Standard Level French B will expand the students' horizons so that they may see French not only as a language, but as an inherent part of cultures beyond their present understanding. Upon completion of this course, students will enter Grade 12 IB French SL. Students require a credit in Grade 10 French (or equivalent) to register for this course.
Grade 11 IB French SL - One Year
(FRE122) 1.0 credit
This course will cover the IB French B SL curriculum over the course of one year. As such, the pace of the course will be very fast and will require a significant amount of self-lead learning. All IB assessments will happen over the course of the Grade 11 year and will culminate in the final IB examination in May. Given the challenging nature of the course, a solid background in the French language is required. This course has been created to foster an appreciation for, and an interest in, the French language and the various countries of the Francophonie, while providing students with an opportunity to improve their communication skills. Students will develop an understanding of their own identity and patrimony through comparison with the global community. Further, this course is designed to assist students to meet the basic requirements of being able to converse, read, and write in French in order to express more sophisticated ideas and arguments. Emphasis is placed on reading, writing, researching, translation, comprehension, use of specific text types, and oral communication skills. Standard Level French B will expand the students' horizons so that they may see French not only as a language, but as an inherent part of cultures beyond their present understanding. Students require a credit in Grade 10 Intermediate or Advanced French (or equivalent) as well as the permission from the Head of Modern Languages to register for this course.

This course has been created to foster an appreciation for, and an interest in, the French language and the various countries of the Francophonie, while providing students with an opportunity to improve their communication skills. Students will develop an understanding of their own identity and patrimony through comparison with the global community. Further, this course is designed to assist students to improve on their existing ability to converse, read, and write in French and to express increasingly sophisticated ideas and arguments. Several novels, literary excerpts, and films based on these themes will be studied. Emphasis is placed on reading, writing, researching, translation, comprehension, and oral communication skills. Higher Level French B will expand the students' horizons so that they may see French not only as a language, but an inherent part of culture beyond their present understanding. Upon completion of this course, students will enter Grade 12 IB French HL. Students require a credit in Grade 10 French (or equivalent) with a grade of at least 75%, as well as the approval of the Head of Modern Languages, to register for this course.

An oral examination and a written examination will be completed for the IB assessment of this course.
