Planned Giving

A gift that costs nothing in your lifetime
Your estate gift has the power to provide an educational experience that empowers students to pursue their goals, provides resources for innovative learning, and builds a better future for the next generation of global leaders.

Founded in 1877, Rothesay Netherwood School is committed to educating, celebrating, and supporting every student so they can be their very best. RNS is able to fulfill that mission on our beautiful campus thanks to the generosity and commitment from our community.

As we plan for the future, we encourage you to consider a gift to help provide future generations with RNS’s unique and exceptional student
experience. By making a Planned Gift, you will be making a significant contribution to the future sustainability of RNS. Your gift will ensure that
we can continue our long-standing tradition of educating and inspiring tomorrow’s leaders.

A Planned Gift is a thoughtful approach that assists individuals and families in achieving their philanthropic objectives while maximizing other financial benefits and providing RNS support for the future. You can make a Planned Gift through a variety of funding channels including those listed here.

List of 5 items.

  • Bequests

A gift made through a donor’s will is probably the best-known form of planned giving. A charitable bequest directed to RNS may be stated in your will in numerous ways, including a specific dollar amount, a percentage of an estate, or as the residual of the estate. It can include cash, securities, or real estate.

Making a bequest allows you to make a substantial gift in the future without diminishing your assets today. In other words, it costs nothing now, yet it may give you a great deal of satisfaction to know that your gift will live on. Your estate will receive a valuable tax credit for your final tax return. This credit can save your estate a considerable amount of tax, particularly if you have holdings of appreciated assets that will be deemed to have been sold at your passing.
  • Life Insurance

Donors often struggle between their desire to achieve philanthropic goals and their need to preserve their estates for their families. A gift
of life insurance can eliminate this conflict. Through a gift of life insurance, you can make a larger donation to RNS than you thought you could afford, at a relatively modest cost and not reduce the value of your estate for your heirs. Life insurance can provide an annual tax credit, or a tax credit in the year of death.
  • Stocks and Securities

For many donors, there are significant tax benefits for donating publicly traded securities rather than cash. Changes to Canada’s tax laws have resulted in the avoidance of capital gains tax on publicly traded securities when they are donated to a registered charity like Rothesay Netherwood School. Highly appreciated securities provide the means to make a low-cost significant gift.
  • Charitable Remainder Trust

A charitable remainder trust allows the donor to make a commitment to RNS while providing income or property use to the donor for the duration of their lifetime (or for the term of the trust). Assets placed in the trust can include: cash, stocks, bonds, securities, real estate, and other investments. The donor will receive a tax receipt for the present value of the assets, taking into account the value of the property, interest rates, and the anticipated term of the trust. The remaining trust capital reverts to the school upon the donor’s death, or at the conclusion of the time period agreed upon in advance. Unlike a
future bequest, for which you get no tax benefit now, a charitable remainder trust provides you with a donation receipt the year you made the gift.
  • Charitable Gift Annuity

If you are 65 years or older, a Canadian resident and have a desire to create a legacy at RNS, but still require the income from your assets, it may make sense to incorporate a charitable gift annuity as part of your estate plan. When you establish a charitable gift annuity, you receive immediate tax savings and secure a guaranteed stream of income for life while providing important support for RNS.
The first step in choosing to name RNS in your will is to discuss your intentions with your family or friends and your lawyer. This decision is a personal decision, but ensuring you have the proper support and documents in place will ensure your intentions are honoured.

Making a donation of any type or size is a very personal decision. We keep all personal information and donation specifics in strict confidence. If you want to share with us and others news of a bequest left for RNS in your will, you can do so in as much detail as you wish. By knowing your plans today, we can work with you to ensure your gift will fulfill your intended benefit for the school.

Many, if not most, people who choose to leave a bequest do not know at the time how much that legacy will be or how it will be made. These decisions can be made at a later date and will likely change as life circumstances change.

Most importantly, by sharing with us news of your bequest today, we will be able to say ’thank you’.

All planned gift donors, no matter the size of the estate gift, will be recognized for their generosity by being named a member of the RNS 1877 Society.

Building the RNS Endowment

When making a Planned Gift, individuals can direct it to the RNS endowment or allocate their gift to a specific fund or create a new one. The endowment is preserved in perpetuity because the principal is invested and
only a fixed portion of the investment income may be spent. All endowed funds are invested in the permanent RNS Foundation endowment.
Professional investment managers make sound and well-diversified investments. Today the RNS endowment is valued at more than $10 million and continues to grow. We are also aware of numerous other bequests to the school that will create a lasting foundation for future generations of RNS students.

Donors might choose to support student scholarships and bursaries, professional development for teachers, historical building preservation, or campus beautification, to name a few. Specific funds can commemorate their class or remember, honour, and pay tribute to a family member or favourite teacher. When creating a personal endowment fund, you
support a specific area of RNS that is important to you. The options for your legacy are limitless.
