Grade 9 Music
(MUS092) 1.0 credit
Students in Grade 9 select Music as an elective course. It is expected that students in this class already have the ability to play an instrument and to read music, although remedial help is provided for those students without that background who show a keen interest. Students also have the opportunity to learn another instrument and to play a keyboard instrument. They learn to play scales and chords and to understand how these act as musical building blocks. Students examine visually and aurally simple musical forms such as ground bass and canon, and practice composing their own versions of these musical structures. Emphasis is placed on improving instrumental technique and sight reading. In music history, students study the music of the Classical Period, focusing on Mozart and Haydn. Students are expected to practice their musical instruments outside the class, and are encouraged to participate in band, choir, and in the Musical.

Grade 11 IB Music SL/HL
(MUS111) 1.0 credit
The Grade 11 Music class introduces students to the IB Music program. The objective of the course is to develop in students the ability to think musically, advancing their skills in performance, musical and critical analysis, composition, and musicianship. Class time will be divided evenly into units in the following areas: musicianship, performance, analysis, critical listening, and compositional techniques. Musicianship incorporates ear training and dictation, interval recognition, sight reading, keyboard skills, simple chord progressions, or score reading and transposition for more advanced keyboard players. Some of the musicianship skills are also covered in the students' development of a systematic instrumental practice and rehearsal regimen on their instruments. The study of musical scores and recordings of different genres facilitates the study of harmony and atonal systems. Writing music in several styles and genres, using various technologies, will encourage experimentation, and ultimately lead the student to discover his or her own compositional voice. Assessments are designed to build the skills required to accomplish the requirements of IB Music.
